BPC170: Computer Maintenance I: A+ Prep

This is the home page for BPC170: Computer Maintenance: A+ Prep.  Students should check this site at least once per week to insure you are informed of any updates to the schedule or assignments.  It expected that each student read all course documents during the first week of class.

Course Description: Technical aspects of the microcomputer, including system setup (hardware and software) and basic troubleshooting. Emphasis on basic troubleshooting, use of tools, hardware components and hardware/software interfacing. Prerequisites: CIS105 or permission of Instructor.

Course Competencies:
  1. Identify the fundamental principles of using personal computers. (I)
  2. Install, configure, optimize, upgrade and perform preventive maintenance on personal computer components using appropriate tools, diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques. (I)
  3. Identify the fundamental principles of using laptops and portable devices. (II)
  4. Install, configure, optimize, upgrade and perform preventive maintenance on laptops and portable devices using appropriate tools, diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques. (II)
  5. Identify the fundamentals of using operating systems. (III)
  6. Install, configure, optimize, upgrade and perform preventive maintenance on operating systems using appropriate tools, diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques. (III)
  7. Identify the fundamental principles of using printers and scanners. (IV)
  8. Identify basic concepts of installing, configuring, optimizing and upgrading printers and scanners using appropriate tools, basic diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques. (IV)
  9. Identify the fundamental principles of networks (V)
  10. Install, configure, optimize and upgrade networks using appropriate tools, diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques. (V)
  11. Identify the fundamental principles of security. (VI)
  12. Install, configure, upgrade, optimize and perform preventive maintenance with respect to security using appropriate tools, diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques. (VI)
  13. Describe the aspects and importance of safety and environmental issues including potential hazards and proper safety procedures with respect to computer maintenance. (VII)
  14. Use job-related professional behavior including communication skills, tact, notation of privacy, confidentiality and respect for the customer and customers’ property. (VIII)
