COURSE INFORMATION
COURSE REQUIREMENTS You need the following to successfully complete this course:
- access to a computer
- an email address
- an Internet connection
- basic computer skills
A. Computer Requirements: Go to the
PVCC Online Student Hub
and choose the "Check Now" button located at the bottom of the page. I do not provide any hardware
or software that is particular to your computer configuration. Please contact your hardware and
software providers. If your computer crashes during the semester, you need to be prepared to come
in to the PVC Computer Commons to continue your coursework. There is a $15.00 fee to use the Commons
for the entire semester.
B. E-mail Requirements: Each student MUST have their own e-mail account.
Please do NOT share e-mail accounts with other students. If you need an e-mail account,
please go to the PVCC Online Student Hub
and look for: "Need an email account? Try Hotmail or Yahoo." I recommend that you have a separate
e-mail for this class only. Also, be sure that you "save a copy" of all work that you turn in!
Files can become corrupted, e-mails can be "lost" in cyberspace and hard drives can crash! Having a
back-up copy assures that your work can be recovered and re-sent. NOTE: You MUST setup a separate
e-mail folder and keep ALL e-mails that you send and receive for this class.
C. Internet Connection Requirements: It is recommended that you have a cable modem OR high-speed
DSL connection, but a dial-up modem connection is fine.
D. Basic Computer Skills: You should
be able to use e-mail and know how to access and navigate websites using a web browser. It really
doesn't matter to me if you use Netscape OR Internet Explorer.
TIME COMMITMENTS - SEMESTER SCHEDULE Students should expect
to spend 6-9 hours per week on this course for each of the 16 weeks in the semester. This is an
amount of time equivalent to a traditionally structured course, except that in an online course,
the entire amount of class time will be spent in self-directed study rather than split between
classroom learning and self-directed learning.
- You need to be online everyday.
- All assignments and study guides are online and you will have a study guide for each test.
- There are 16 weeks in the Spring 2007 semester (including Spring Break).
- The course begins Tuesday, January 16th and ends Friday, May 4th.
- We cover approximately one chapter per week.
DEADLINES This is NOT a "self-paced" class,
there are very specific DEADLINES. Please refer to the Course-At-A-Glance
for the Course Schedule! You will have access to two chapters every week,
the current Chapter and the upcoming Chapter.
As we move through the semester, I will remove one Chapter every time I add the next chapter.
DROP/ADD If you feel as if you have registered for this
online section in error OR if you feel that you can't keep up with the course schedule - it would
be better if you withdrew from this course. Please refer to the current Class Schedule for a full
explanation of the PVCC Refund Policy. To drop from this section and add another section, please
contact the PVCC Admissions & Records Office (602) 787-7020.
STUDENTS RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES
WITHDRAWALS You are responsible for initiating the withdrawal
procedure if you wish to withdraw from the class. However, if you fall more than two (2) chapters behind
the rest of the class, I may withdraw you myself.
INCOMPLETES "Incompletes" are NOT given
for this online class. Please make sure that you manage your time accordingly so that you can complete the class by May 4, 2007.
MASTERY OF WRITTEN WORK At the instructor's discretion, students may be
asked to re-do and re-submit any and/or all written work until it is mastered at an acceptable level.
PENALTY FOR SUBMITTING WORK PAST THE STATED DEADLINES All written work
and assignments submitted past the stated deadlines will be accepted and graded. The penalty for submitting
late work is 10% deduction in points for each day late. Please realize that this means that you will receive
NO POINTS even if you submit your work more than 10 days past the posted deadline. Discussion Topics will be
open for responses only during the stated open period. Responses either before or after the open period will
be deleted by the instructor.
FOR YOUR PROTECTION It is your responsibility to SAVE ALL of your e-mails,
assignments, and papers on either your hard drive or on a diskette. Keep these copies in a safe place until you have
received your final grade. NOTE: You MUST setup a separate e-mail folder and keep ALL e-mails that you send and
receive for this class.
ONLINE TESTING PROBLEMS All tests are given online. These tests are "timed."
Please look at the bottom of the screen on your web browser for the elapsed time (AS YOU ARE TAKING THE ACTUAL TEST).
You are allowed to go over the time by no more than two minutes.
I will only "re-set" your test due to technology failure once during the semester. If you have any technology
failures after that, you will be required to come to the PVCC campus and take your test. If you can't come to
campus within a week of a technology failure, you will be given a zero for that test.
If you go over the
elapsed time by more than two minutes, you will be subject to the following schedule:
- First time = you must send a reasonable explanation to me ASAP as to why you went over the time limit.
- Second time = you must send a reasonable explanation to me ASAP as to why you went over the time limit and
will be sent a "warning" email from me.
- Third time = you will be required to take the rest of the tests in the PVCC Testing Center.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT Students engaging in the following are subject to
disciplinary sanctions outlined in the PVCC Catalog, Student Policies Section. Acts of Dishonesty; examples include:
- Plagiarism;
Furnishing false information; Falsifying records related to coursework; Forgery,
alteration, misuse of any college document; Tampering with the election of any college-recognized official.
- Disruption or obstruction of teaching, research, administration, disciplinary proceedings, or college activities.
An instructor can remove a student from class for disciplinary reasons.
- Physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion and/or conduct that threatens the
health or safety of any person.
- Attempted or actual theft.
- Failure to comply with direction of college officials or law enforcement officers.
- Unauthorized possession, duplication or use of keys to any college premises.
- Violation of federal, state, or local laws on college campus or at college sponsored activities.
- Use, possession or distribution of narcotics or other controlled substances.
- Use, possession, or distribution of alcoholic beverages, or public intoxication.
- Illegal or unauthorized possession of firearms, explosives, weapons, or dangerous chemicals.
- Participation in a college demonstration that disrupts the normal operations of the college.
- Obstruction of the free flow of pedestrian or vehicular traffic on college premises.
- Conduct which is disorderly, lewd or indecent.
- Theft or other abuse of computer time.
- Abuse of the judicial system.
PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is a serious offense. It is the unacknowledged
use of another's words, ideas, or information. Some common examples of plagiarism are summarizing or
paraphrasing source material without documentation, quoting without citations, copying all or arts of
another writer's paper, having another person write the paper, or purchasing another writer's paper.
To
avoid plagiarism, students must give a source credit for any ideas or information they have used in an essay,
whether they have paraphrased, summarized, or quoted from the source. A student who plagiarizes is subject to
disciplinary probation and suspension (found in the current PVCC Catalog). The first occurrence of plagiarism
may result in a zero for that assignment. A second occurrence may result in a grade of "F" for the course.
DISABILITY SERVICES The only way that you can receive "Special
Accommodations" for this class is to be registered with the PVCC "Disability Resource Center."
The Disability Resource Center ( DRC ) provides
information and services to students with any documented disability who are attending classes at
Paradise Valley Community College ( PVCC ).
STUDENT HANDBOOK & CATALOG All policies in the PVCC College Catalog,
the PVCC Student Handbook, and specifically listed in this syllabus, apply to this course. Please consult the
current PVCC College Catalog and Student Handbook and be familiar with all PVCC College and
Maricopa Community College District policies.
