DEVIANT BEHAVIOR AND THE CRIMINAL MIND
In this Learning Community, we will explore deviance, social roles, and psychological disorders in the criminal mind as we connect relationships between abnormal behavior and crime trends. We will study several different theories, causes, and treatments of abnormal behavior within the correctional and psychological communities. This 6 credit learning environment will include discussions, small group projects, instructional videos, guest speakers, and selected observational sites.
  • Designed for students who wish to explore an education or career in one of the many Behavioral Health fields.
  • Administration of Justice Studies - AJS225 Criminology, will fulfill a required course for the AJS 2 year degree.
Total of 6 credits -- students must co-enroll in both sections:

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES IN THE INFORMATION AGE
Do you want to explore, understand and become actively involved in your world? Does research writing frustrate you? Does navigating through the massive amounts of information available confuse you? This Learning Community will help you develop the knowledge and skills to find the right information and incorporate it seamlessly into quality writing for college.

In this dynamic 6-credit learning environment, we will explore global issues through research in print and on-line resources, and learn how to effectively evaluate and communicate our informed perspective to engage and persuade audiences in written essays, an e-portfolio and a final project.

  • This is designed for students who wish to gain transferable research and writing skills that will serve them in all their  college work and beyond.
Total of 6 credits - students must co-enroll in both sections:

LEADERSHIP THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
For Honors students who are interested in developing and improving their leadership skills. Through readings, formal lectures from outstanding scholars, discussions, service learning, and many hands-on activities, we will discover universal leadership principles and skills and apply them to our own lives. Prerequisites: Admission to the PVCC Honors Program or permission of the instructors.

LEARNING IN LIVING COLOR:
TRANSCENDING CULTURAL BARRIERS
Students will be actively involved in cross-cultural learning experiences that will help them prepare children to live in a diverse, culturally rich global society. Children's literature will provide the vehicle for knowing, understanding, and valuing cultural diversity. Must co-enroll in EDU291-4055 or ENH291-1421 and EDU230-4054 for a total of 6 credit hours.

LIVING ON SPACESHIP EARTH
Earth, a small planet and the only home humanity will likely ever have, so why not get to know it a little? For instance, our planet's circumference is roughly 25,000 miles, a distance you easily travel in your lifetime considering the odometer on your car. So, why is it such a mystery? Stories about hurricanes, global warming, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural phenomena tend to crowd our daily news. The media promotes fear. When will the next tsunami occur? Will there be a "global killer" sized meteor? The truth? Our planet is not static, but ever changing and highly dynamic. It is not to be feared, but explored and understood.

In this Learning Community we address questions from "Why is the sky blue during the day but reddish at sunset?" to "Is there a connection between global warming and hurricanes?" These ideas and more will be explored as we examine Spaceship Earth

Total of 7 credits -- students must co-enroll in both sections:
