Spring 2009
THE ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE:
BIOGRAPHY & IDENTITY
In this learning community students will examine the lives of
selected American artists through published biographies, memoirs,
and works of other literary genres. The artists to be studied
will represent a variety of disciplines, including creative writing,
dance, film, music, theatre, and visual arts. The literature will
expose students to role models and techniques for the development
of specific competencies associated with personal, artistic
and career success. We will explore the following:
• What does it mean to me to be an artist?
• Who am I, as seen through various paradigmatic lenses, including
the intrapersonal, the artistic, the familial, the social,
the cultural, the historical, and the philosophical?
• In what ways do the life experiences of various American
artists suggest general principles and concrete techniques
for personal, artistic, and career success?
