Instructional Workshops

We work with faculty and departments to design, implement, and assist with creating lessons and assessments for teaching and learning. Past activities have included interactive lessons and workshops. We are available to provide one-on-one, small group, and even department support. We have also assisted in creating online orientations, videos, and how-to guides for students.

To register for a PVCC training session:

  1. Log into HCM using your MEID and password.
  2. Follow this path: Main Menu > Self Service > Learning and Development > Request Training Enrollment.
  3. Use any of the following to search for the session; course name, number, location, date, presenter, or the % for all courses.
  4. Select "View Available Sessions" and choose a session.
  5. Click "Continue" and then "Submit" to complete the registration process.

Canvas Basics Workshops

Canvas Basics is a 1.5 hour workshop that will introduce you to Canvas. Users will be taken through the process of setting up core components in their Canvas course, including Course Settings, Notifications, and Creating a Profile. Users will have an intro to General Canvas Navigation, Communicating through Canvas, Adding your Syllabus, Modules and Pages, Creating Assignments, and Using the Grade Book. This workshop is required prior to receiving a Canvas course.

Canvas Advanced is a 2.5 hour workshop that focuses on creating a module using the Canvas tools; Announcements, Assignments, Collaborations, Conferences, Discussions, File Management, Grades & SpeedGrader, Pages, People, Quizzes, Chat, and more! Discover how you can analyze and view statistics for your students and course content. Experiment with the Canvas Apps feature. If you plan to use more advanced features, this workshop is for you.

Course Design (Part 1 and 2)-

This session you will learn:


  1. Identify the difference between online, traditional, and non-traditional students.
  2. Develop an icebreaker for an online environment.
  3. Analyze an instructional design model.
  4. Demonstrate effective use of the learning management for teaching and learning.
  5. Discuss and modify a syllabus for online.
  6. Design one module (lesson plan unit) that includes effective teaching practices.
  7. Synthesize your experience.

EDGE

The EDGE Program is a professional development learning community for new PVCC Adjunct Faculty members (first three years of teaching experience). This hybrid program is a blend of in-person and online. There will be 4 in-person sessions.


During these sessions faculty will explore how to create a community of learners, outcome-based learning, active teaching and learning, assessment, and useful instructional technologies. Overall, this is meant to provide faculty with a variety of student engagement techniques for any course format.

Power of Visual Design

Visual and Graphic design is learning the basics of layout and design to visually enhance your course. Basic layout concepts and visual layout techniques to solve basic design problems with banners, text, and buttons.

Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship allows us to connect, collaborate, and share by using technology appropriately. This session on Digital Citizenship will provide participants with an overview of what it means to be a good citizen in this rapid changing digital world. As we become more involved online we need to understand and translate our skills, technically and socially into the virtual world.

Open Labs

Open Labs are for PVC staff and employees to come in and get one on one assistance for all instructional and technology issues. We offer regular drop in and open lab times every Thursday from 3pm to 5pm in the Computer Commons. If you need specific help, please contact the CTL ahead of time so we can assure the appropriate experienced staff member will be available.
